THE CASE FOR SEALED CRAWL SPACES
Thermal and moisture control in crawl spaces is a very important step to reducing energy consumption in a home or building. Both scientific research and actual field installations demonstrate that properly designed crawl spaces can provide much better moisture control and energy efficiency than traditional, wall vented crawl spaces.
Homes and buildings that have been contructed or remodeled to include a closed crawl space can save a signifigant amount of energy, help maintain a high level of indoor air quality and protect the longevity of structural framing and insulation. According to Joseph Lstiburek of the Building Science Corporation, "Unvented, conditioned crawl spaces with insulation on the perimeter perform better in terms of safety and health (pest control), comfort (warm floors, uniform temperatures), durability (moisture) and energy consumption than passively vented crawl spaces with sub floor insulation" (Conditioned Crawl Space Construction, Performance and Codes - Research Report 0401, 2004-11-02).
The U.S. Department of Energy adds "If you properly insulate your crawl space - in addition to air sealing and controlling moisture, you will save on energy costs and increase your home's comfort (A Consumer's Guide to Energy Efficieny and Renewable Energy - Crawl Space Insulation).
This goal of this site is to educate home owners, building owners, designers and builders about the benefits of proper crawl space design and maintanance and provide links to informative resources and learning tools.
